23rd Annual COTSEAL-SEASSI Conference on Southeast Asian Language Teaching and Applied Linguistics

The 2015 COTSEAL-SEASSI Conference will be held July 17-18 in Room 206, Ingraham Hall at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Follow this link to see the Conference Program. Click on the title of any presentation to see the full abstract for that presentation.

Program Update 7/8/15: The first paper listed on Friday (at 2:15 pm), by Wayan Ariati, will not be presented. Instead, Dr. Abby Cohn, of Cornell University (who is also our keynote speaker) will lead a roundtable discussion on "Distance Language Teaching of Southeast Asian Languages: Advantages and Challenges" during the same time slot. Any teachers with experience teaching Southeast Asian languages to distance students are strongly encouraged to attend and join in the discussion. Note that, due to links to abstracts already embedded in the PDF, the Conference Program linked to above has not been updated with this program change.

Call for Papers (Now CLOSED; the deadline was May 25)

Travel grants have already been awarded for this year's conference. You can read information on Travel Grants here.

Conference Logistics

Transportation from the Airport

The Dane County Regional (Madison) airport code is MSN. http://www.msnairport.com/ There are frequent connecting flights from Chicago, Minneapolis, Detroit, and other cities, operated by a variety of airlines, including American, Delta, and United. The airport is 5.8 miles from the conference site on campus.

Food

There will be a wine and snacks reception provided by COTSEAL on Friday night, July 17 (5-7 pm), and a box lunch provided at the conference on Saturday, July 18. You're on your own for dinner on Friday and Saturday, but it's expected that conference attendees will get together and go out to eat in groups. There's a wide selection of reasonably-priced restaurants on State St., a short walk from campus and Lowell Center (hotel), and more dining options--including Southeast Asian food--1-3 miles away for those with cars or taking a taxi.

Poetry Night

Poetry Night is a long-running SEASSI/COTSEAL tradition. It takes place from 7-9 pm Saturday night, July 18, in Lowell Center (the recommended hotel for the COTSEAL Conference), Room B-1-B & A. It's an opportunity for SEASSI students, faculty, and COTSEAL conference attendees to share and listen to poetry and songs in Southeast Asian languages. More information about Poetry Night will be sent out soon. We hope that all of you can stay Saturday night and attend, and perform yourself if you're so inclined.
